Summary

Whitman Elementary is a small, K-5 public school in the San Diego Unified district with about 102 students, serving a community where a significant majority of families face economic challenges.

The school has shown impressive and steady improvement over the last several years, moving from a lower-performing rating to a solid, middle-of-the-road state ranking. This progress is particularly notable given its student population, and the school has become especially effective in supporting its economically disadvantaged students. A major success story is the dramatic reduction in chronic absenteeism, which was a serious issue after the pandemic but is now much closer to average—a stronger performance in this area compared to a similar nearby school like Sequoia Elementary. Academically, Whitman's students perform near or slightly above state averages in core subjects, with fourth graders excelling in English, though the school has room to grow in math and science.

Whitman operates with higher per-student funding than most area schools, which likely supports its positive trajectory. However, parents should note the student-teacher ratio has recently increased, which could affect individual attention. Compared to higher-ranking schools in the area like Holmes Elementary or Curie Elementary, Whitman serves a very different community, making direct comparisons of test scores less meaningful. Its story is one of a small, well-resourced school that is successfully helping a high-needs population make consistent academic and attendance gains.

Open Quote I think that this school is absolutely FANTASTIC!

Students are learning well. I should know my daughter has excelled since she has been there.

The teachers are professional and at the same care about each individual student.

Their recognition programs promote continued success.

The PTA is inviting, involved and active.

Lastly, but a very big point, is that the school is safe!

I should also point out that I love the big windows in the classrooms, allowing the children some sense of weather and life. I don't want my child to be a mushroom, stuck in a stuffy windowless room! Close Quote
