Summary

Melrose Leadership Academy is a K-8 public school serving 722 students in Oakland, part of the Oakland Unified district, that has transformed from a low-performing to a solidly average school statewide over the past decade.

Academically, the school is a standout in its area, consistently outperforming the district and often meeting or beating state averages, with science being a particular strength. What truly sets Melrose Leadership Academy apart from nearby schools like Horace Mann Elementary and Allendale Elementary is its combination of stronger test scores, much lower chronic absenteeism, and a more economically diverse student population. While its statewide ranking has fluctuated recently, its core academic proficiency remains significantly higher than all surrounding district schools.

The school's low chronic absenteeism rate suggests strong student engagement, and its K-8 structure allows it to support students' growth over many years. However, performance trends for some student groups have been volatile, indicating the school's success is not yet consistent for all. Compared to a nearby charter like Urban Montessori Charter, MLA spends more per student but achieves similar academic results with a different model.

Open Quote melrose leadership needs to rethink how they treat their students of color, the treachers and the parents are very baised in dealing with other parents that are raising their childern as single parents. The Prinicpal shows favortism towards other which if you set in one of their meetings you see their is no order of any kind yet they want your money for all diffrent donations which their is no type of thank you give from the school, yet you will get a phone call or a letter asking for things and time that most single working parents dont have all the time you rank a 2....
