Summary

Joaquin Miller Elementary is a public K-5 school serving about 406 students in the Oakland Unified School District, consistently earning a 4-star rating and performing well above district and state averages in English, Math, and Science.

Academically, the school is a solid, steady performer within its district. While schools like Redwood Heights Elementary and Crocker Highlands Elementary rank higher, Joaquin Miller outperforms others such as Laurel Elementary. Its math scores are a particular strength. The school serves a more economically diverse population than some higher-performing neighbors and has shown remarkable success in dramatically reducing chronic student absenteeism since the pandemic.

The school's context is important: it operates in a district that faces challenges, yet it maintains strong outcomes. A comparison with the exceptionally high-performing schools in the adjacent Piedmont City Unified district, like Havens Elementary, highlights stark differences in community resources and outcomes across district boundaries. Overall, Joaquin Miller provides a consistent and effective education, especially notable for its support of economically diverse students and its recovery in student attendance.

Open Quote Joaquin Miller Elementary School truly deserves its 5-star rating! The principal is incredibly dedicated and is doing amazing things for the school community, fostering an uplifting environment for both students and parents. After completing the inaugural TK class for the 2024-2025 year, I can say with confidence that my child and I are excited to return for kindergarten and beyond. Also, the awesome after school program ran by JCC is onsite.

As a Black parent, I genuinely appreciate the school's commitment to diversity, which reflects the values I hold dear. Moreover, the upcoming renovation of the playground by Steph Curry’s non-profit, Eat, Play, Learn, is a fantastic initiative that speaks to the school’s vibrant and supportive community. I highly recommend Joaquin Miller Elementary to all families looking for a nurturing and enriching educational experience! Close Quote

Open Quote My kids have gotten a top notch education at JM, with its excellent teachers and programs. It's a shame this wonderful community has been reduced to petty bickering in the wake of a new after school program being foisted upon us by the principal and district, despite outspoken parent and teacher concerns about the lack of transparency of the process, as well as separation of church and state issues with this particular vendor's religious-toned mission. A shocking, heartbreaking year for this longtime parent. Close Quote
