Summary

Robert Elliott Alternative Education Center is a Modesto high school serving about 480 students in grades 9-12 within the Modesto City High district, operating as an alternative program for students who may not thrive in traditional settings.

The school faces significant challenges, particularly with student attendance, where a 77% chronic absenteeism rate is far higher than nearby schools like Peter Johansen High or Modesto High. Academically, proficiency rates in core subjects are in the low single digits, which is dramatically lower than all surrounding traditional high schools and even other alternative programs like Teel School. Despite this, the school reports a strong 88.2% graduation rate, creating a notable gap between earning a diploma and demonstrating grade-level academic skills.

Robert Elliott operates with more resources per student and a lower student-teacher ratio than comparison schools, yet outcomes have remained persistently low for years. This suggests the student population faces profound barriers that extend beyond the classroom. The experience of Aspire Vanguard College Preparatory Academy, a charter school with a similar high-needs population but stronger results, indicates that different educational models may yield different outcomes for students requiring alternative pathways.

Open Quote I have had 4 children attend this school and currently have 2 enrolled. In the beginning I believed the shorter days and no homework would benefit my children but when you couple that with the uncaring attitude of the faculty and teachers it makes this school a complete waste of space. I use the word 'school' lightly in that it is run more like a prison than an education center. Campus security is allowed, along with teachers, to accuse students of punishable actions without giving the accused the ability to defend themselves and often times without any proof that an offense has even actually occurred. Discipline is inconsistent with one student being suspended for a infraction of the rules while another is allowed to skate free for the same offense. This center is not a place of learning but more like a daycare center where they simply enroll your child so they can be paid for their daily attendance. Specifically, there is one English teacher who is not capable of speaking or writing English correctly herself yet has been given the right to grade others on their ability to speak and write English appropriately. I am firmly convinced that the faculty consists of people who were rejected by every other school and education center, either that or they are employed at Elliot as a community service to repay a debt to society. Unfortunately there is no lower rating than 1 star. Close Quote
