Summary

John H. Liechty Middle is a public middle school serving about 750 students in grades 6-8 in the Los Angeles Unified school district, located in a community where nearly all students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Academically, the school faces significant challenges, with student proficiency in English, math, and science far below both state averages and the performance of nearby schools like Virgil Middle and Rise Kohyang Middle. Chronic absenteeism, at 26.7%, is also higher than at most comparison schools, such as Young Oak Kim Academy which has a much lower rate. The school's statewide ranking has declined over the past decade, and it shows uneven results for different student groups, with some subgroups performing much better than others.

An interesting finding is that despite spending more per student than the other local schools analyzed, John H. Liechty Middle has the lowest academic outcomes, creating a spending paradox. The presence of higher-performing charter schools like Equitas Academy 4 in the area, which serve similar student populations, suggests that improvement is possible. Addressing chronic absenteeism and learning from the approaches of nearby schools could be important pathways for progress.
