Summary

Mark Twain Middle is a large public school serving grades 6-8 in the Los Angeles Unified district, with nearly 1,000 students and a story of remarkable academic improvement over the past decade.

The school's journey is its most compelling feature, transforming from a low-performing school to a consistent high-performer, now earning a 4-star rating with test scores above both district and state averages. It stands out from many nearby Los Angeles Unified schools, like Marina del Rey Middle and Daniel Webster Middle, through its sustained upward trend, strong attendance culture, and efficient use of resources, achieving these results with moderate per-student spending. It even outperforms some specialized schools in the area, such as Katherine Johnson STEM Academy and Orville Wright Engineering and Design Magnet.

While Mark Twain Middle is a bright spot within its district, it's important for parents to note a few key points. The school has a significant challenge in supporting its English Language Learners, an area where it struggles dramatically. Furthermore, when compared to high-performing middle schools in neighboring districts like Culver City Middle (Culver City Unified) and Lincoln Middle (Santa Monica-Malibu Unified), a performance gap remains. The school also shows a pattern where student proficiency tends to decline from 6th to 8th grade, which is an area of focus.

Open Quote This school has changed DRAMATICALLY in the past few years as more and more local families have joined the Mark Twain community. Many families are now coming from local elementariness and putting much effort into improving not only the grounds but the staff and administration. MUCH MORE involvement by the local families and with the new Principal, now in her fourth year there, the school is starting to see some dramatic changes. Wonderful community of good families, looking to increase that even more as the highly gifted program in the fall of 2020 starts. Close Quote
