Summary

Gardner Street Elementary is a K-5 public school serving 361 students in the Los Angeles Unified School District, located in a neighborhood where many families face economic challenges, with over three-quarters qualifying for meal assistance.

Academically, Gardner Street performs solidly, with test scores near or above district and state averages, and it has a particular standout strength in science where it significantly outperforms most other schools in the Los Angeles Unified district. The school shows effective support for English learners and students from low-income families, and it achieves these results while spending considerably less per student than many nearby schools like Vine Street Elementary or Hollywood Elementary. However, the school faces a significant challenge with chronic student absenteeism, which is higher than the state average, though it has shown recent improvement from pandemic-era peaks.

When compared to other local schools, Gardner Street holds a middle ground. It doesn't reach the exceptional performance levels of schools like Wonderland Avenue Elementary, but it consistently outperforms others with similar student demographics. Its balanced performance across subjects and efficient use of resources are notable, though its statewide ranking has fluctuated in recent years. The school provides a stable, mid-tier option in a diverse educational landscape, demonstrating that respectable outcomes can be achieved even with significant economic challenges and lower-than-average funding.

Open Quote I am amazed that this school has such a great rating. It has no programs or oportunities for the kids aside from the required curriculum. Every event I have been to is completely disorganized and a headache. There are hardly any feild trips, no year book and no after school activities. The star after school program is a joke. You are basically paying for your kids to sit in a room and "do" homework, or play on the playground. I am ashamed it took me 3 years to start my search for a better school for my son.

Oh, don't expect to see any PTA meetings on the calendar either. Yes they have one, yes they will take your money for it, no they don't do anything. Close Quote
