Summary

Sierra Middle is a public middle school in Stockton, California, serving 582 students in grades 7-8. It is part of the Lincoln Unified School District, which is ranked 937 out of 1,565 districts in the state.

Sierra Middle consistently outperforms the district and state averages in English Language Arts (ELA) proficiency, with 52.11% of students proficient or better in 2024-2025, compared to 43.56% for the district and 48.81% for the state. However, the school's mathematics and science performance lags behind the state, with only 29.09% and 19.64% of students proficient or better, respectively. The school's chronic absenteeism rate is also high, ranging from 20.7% to 31.5% in recent years, significantly above the state average.

Compared to nearby schools, Sierra Middle's academic performance is generally better than Millswood Middle and Waterloo Elementary, but falls short of the high-performing Elkhorn school and the charter school, Aspire Benjamin Holt Middle. The school's challenges may be linked to its high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, which can impact student engagement and academic achievement.

Open Quote This school is the best kept secret in the district! All 4 of my children attended SMS and they all had a fabulous experience. Not only were they fully nurtured to be the compassionate, creative, and smart people that they are, but they were encouraged to find their individual voices! The Honors US History teacher and her class were phenomenal. The other parents and I felt like we were getting this amazing lesson in civics and action together with our kids. All the teachers are great and each of my children miss Sierra Middle School and count that experience as a defining moment in their lives.
By the time they left SMS, My kids were fully prepared for the rigor and demands of high school. Sierra gave them the confidence, knowledge, and skills to tackle anything that came their way. Close Quote
