Summary

Walnut Elementary is a K-5 public school serving 541 students in the Baldwin Park Unified district, operating in a high-need community where over 90% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

The school has notable strengths, particularly in mathematics where its proficiency rate exceeds the district average, and it demonstrates exceptional effectiveness in supporting English Language Learners, consistently earning high state rankings for this subgroup. However, its overall academic standing is mid-tier within its district, ranking below Kenmore Elementary despite having higher per-student spending, and it faces challenges with chronic absenteeism and science proficiency. Performance varies significantly by grade, with third graders excelling in math but fifth graders struggling, and a recent achievement gap has emerged where male students are performing below female students.

When compared to schools in neighboring districts, such as Durfee Elementary in El Monte City which achieves higher scores with similar demographics and lower spending, it suggests broader district-level factors influence outcomes. For improvement, Walnut could look to adapt its successful ELL strategies to boost English Language Arts, address attendance by learning from district peers like Tracy Elementary, and strengthen its science curriculum.

Open Quote Wonderful school! Walnut enjoys a successful dual language program. They offer enrichment programs like "folklorico" dance, chorus, guitar club and violin class. They also still have 20 to 1 from K-3! Close Quote
