Summary

Aptitud Community Academy at Goss is a K-8 public school serving 386 students in San Jose's Alum Rock Union Elementary district, operating in a high-need community where the vast majority of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

While the school's overall state ranking is low, it shows important strengths, particularly in teaching mathematics and supporting English Language Learners (ELL). Its math scores are above the district average, and its ELL students have performed significantly better than both district and state averages in recent years. However, the school faces challenges with consistency; for example, 7th graders excel in math, but proficiency drops sharply in 8th grade. Chronic student absenteeism, though improving, remains higher than the state average.

Interesting comparisons to nearby schools include Aptitud's lower student-teacher ratio compared to Rocketship Academy Brilliant Minds, yet Aptitud's overall academic results trail those charter schools. In contrast, Aptitud's chronic absenteeism rate is much better than Voices College-Bound Language Academy at Mt. Pleasant but not as strong as Adelante Dual Language Academy II. The school's performance has been volatile over the past decade, indicating a need for more stable, effective strategies that can build on its demonstrated successes.

Open Quote Although the test scores suck here, you gotta account for the amount of children that come from Non-English speaking homes. So teaching the same subjects to the same amount of students is double the work when compared to many other schools.

My girls have gone here since pre-school, they are now in 2nd and 3rd grade, and almost all of the staff is very loving. Only one teacher that I have met there does not respect parents wishes, but once we transferred out of her class it was fine.

Besides the one teacher, and nowhere is there a perfect place yet, they are surrounded by many loving faculty and staff. Close Quote
