Summary

Charlotte Patterson Elementary in Gilbert, AZ, is a highly performing PK-6 school within the Chandler Unified District #80, serving 753 students and consistently ranking in the top 10% of Arizona elementary schools with a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger in six of the last ten years.

What truly sets Patterson apart is its exceptional effectiveness with specific student groups. The school ranks 15th out of 549 schools statewide for its work with low-income students, a remarkable achievement given that only 8% of its students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Similarly, it ranks in the 92nd percentile for Hispanic students, outperforming many schools in the area. Interestingly, Patterson achieves these outstanding results while spending less per student ($7,317) than nearby peers like Navarrete Elementary ($10,007) and Jane D. Hull Elementary ($9,821), making it a model of efficiency. However, its performance with White students is its weakest subgroup metric, ranking in the 66th percentile—a notable contrast to its overall high standing.

While Patterson is a top-tier school, it operates in a neighborhood with elite institutions like Weinberg Gifted Academy (ranked #5) and Bridges Elementary (ranked #14), which have higher test scores due to specialized programs. For example, Weinberg’s 5th-grade math proficiency is 89% compared to Patterson’s 63%. The closest school geographically is American Leadership Academy Gilbert South K-6, a charter school with smaller class sizes (11.1 vs. 18.2 student-teacher ratio) but a lower overall rank (223 vs. 84). Patterson’s math scores show an upward trend from 3rd to 6th grade, suggesting effective curriculum building, and its consistent excellence for diverse student groups makes it a standout choice for families seeking a well-rounded, efficient school.

Open Quote Inconsistent with curriculum and varies way too much from teacher to teacher. Very, very clickish. Some kids get to choose their teachers and stay in same class with their friends bc they are close to staff. When I tried always told they cannot do that, kids get randomly put in classrooms each year except the click stick together. Bullying is a growing concern as well. Very disspointed with this CuSd school. Probably time for an overhaul in the administration placing a more effective Principal. Close Quote
