Summary

Verbena High School is an alternative public school serving grades PK-12 in Verbena, Alabama, part of the Chilton County School District, which is ranked 102 out of 135 districts in the state. With 575 students, Verbena High has a higher 4-year graduation rate around 90% in recent years compared to the state average, but also higher chronic absenteeism rates ranging from 10-17%.

Academically, Verbena High School consistently underperforms the state and county averages on standardized tests across all grade levels and subjects. For example, in 2024-2025 only 6.82% of 11th graders were proficient in math compared to 23.71% statewide. However, the school spends more per student ($9,584) than the nearby Thorsby High School ($9,035) and Isabella High School ($8,326), and has a lower student-teacher ratio around 17-18 compared to 21 at Thorsby High and 18.6 at Isabella High.

The high graduation rates despite low test scores and high poverty levels (63-83% of students qualify for free/reduced lunch) suggest Verbena High School is doing a good job supporting students, but the low proficiency rates indicate many may not be fully prepared for college or careers. Addressing the root causes of the high chronic absenteeism could be a key focus area for improvement at this school.

Open Quote I believe that Verbena High School is a great school. It is small so the students get to know everyone and the faculty takes a personal interest in each child. The principal, Mrs. Robin Cagle, is working to improve the Verbena High School facilities and campus. She is an alumnus of the school so she cares about the reputation of the school and strives to make it better. The faculty are all highly qualified and want to see that each student is successful and receives the individual attention he or she needs. Verbena's graduates do well in college and in their chosen careers. Close Quote
