Summary

Pineville Elementary School in Pineville, WV, serves 296 students in grades PK-4 as part of the Wyoming County Schools district, and it stands out as one of the top-performing elementary schools in the area despite serving a community with significant economic challenges.

Pineville's academic strengths are clear in both core subjects. In mathematics, 52.3% of students are proficient, which is nearly 19 percentage points higher than the district average and about 13 points above the state average. The school's English Language Arts performance is equally strong, with 53.4% proficiency compared to 41.9% district-wide and 47.6% statewide. What's particularly impressive is the school's success with students from low-income backgrounds—this subgroup ranks in the 75th percentile statewide, far exceeding what you'd typically expect. The school also shows excellent grade-level progression, with 4th graders improving significantly over 3rd graders in both math (46.8% to 58.5%) and ELA (46.8% to 61%). This upward trend suggests effective teaching that builds on prior learning.

When compared to nearby schools, Pineville's achievements become even more notable. It ranks 128th out of 355 West Virginia elementary schools, making it the second-best elementary school in Wyoming County, behind only Mullens Elementary School (ranked 107th). While Mullens excels in math (74.5% proficiency), Pineville actually outperforms Mullens in ELA (53.4% vs. 41.2%), showing more balanced instruction. The contrast with other district schools is stark—Huff Cons Elementary & Middle School (287th), Road Branch Elementary & Middle School (279th), and Berlin McKinney Elementary School (327th) all rank in the bottom quarter statewide. Even schools in neighboring McDowell County Schools, like Kimball Elementary School (314th) and Welch Elementary School (324th), lag far behind. Pineville achieves these results while spending less per student ($12,524) than several lower-performing peers, demonstrating efficient use of resources and a school culture focused on academic success.

Open Quote I really love Pineville Elementary School. I think they have an awesome staff working there, and my son says he likes it better than Glen Fork, which was closer. He makes really good grades and I am so proud of him, but I know he has had some great teachers to help him along the way. I want to thank the staff for going above and beyond for our children.
