Summary

Hinton Area Elementary is a public elementary school in Hinton, West Virginia, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 292 students. The school is part of the Summers County Schools district, which is ranked 53 out of 55 districts in the state and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Hinton Area Elementary has consistently ranked among the lowest-performing elementary schools in West Virginia over the past several years, with the school ranking 353 out of 355 elementary schools in the state in the 2024-2025 school year and receiving a 0-star rating. The school's academic performance, as measured by proficiency rates on the West Virginia Assessment, is significantly below the state and district averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, the school's 3rd-grade proficiency rates were 20% in mathematics and 17.5% in English Language Arts, compared to the state averages of 53% and 44.8%, respectively.

Despite having a relatively low student-teacher ratio of 10.8 students per teacher and per-student spending of $10,439 in the 2018-2019 school year, which is lower than the nearby Talcott Elementary School and Jumping Branch Elementary School, Hinton Area Elementary's academic outcomes do not seem to reflect these resource advantages. The school's persistent low performance and equity concerns for certain student subgroups suggest that the school may need to re-evaluate its resource allocation and instructional practices to better support student learning.

Open Quote Poor parental involvement policies that deter parental involvement, lack of appropriate expenditures to facilitate better educational policies ( at one point the Summers County Superintendent made just 20K less than the WV State Superintendent while teachers make the state mandated minimum salary and lack necessary tools and training to meet the needs of Summers County Schools students), and last but not least, as of November 1, 2016, at least one third grade class has not had a graded writing assignment.
