Summary

Walton Elementary/Middle School is a small, rural PK-8 school in Walton, WV, serving 228 students as part of the Roane County Schools district. The school offers a notably favorable student-teacher ratio of 10.8:1, better than many nearby schools, and spends about $11,790 per student—comparable to higher-performing schools in the region.

However, the most important thing for parents to know is that the school experienced a dramatic academic collapse in the 2025-2026 school year. After years of performing in the middle of the pack statewide (55th percentile in 2022-2023), the school plummeted to the 4th percentile—a rank of 342 out of 355 schools. This decline is not uniform across all students. The most striking issue is a severe gender gap: female students scored in the 39th percentile while male students scored in the 1st percentile, the largest such disparity among all comparison schools. Additionally, 6th grade mathematics saw a 0% proficiency rate, compared to 14.6% district and 35.4% state averages. Performance with low-income students also collapsed from the 51st to the 1st percentile. This decline is not mirrored by district peers like Geary Elementary/Middle School (14th percentile) or Spencer Elementary School (13th percentile), making Walton the lowest-performing school in the district despite having the best student-teacher ratio.

There are important bright spots. The school's 8th grade English Language Arts proficiency (60.2%) exceeds the state average by 16 points, and 7th grade ELA also beats state averages. Science proficiency (30.4%) tops both district and state benchmarks. This shows the school can achieve strong results in upper-grade literacy and science. The contrast with nearby Fairplain Elementary School in Jackson County Schools—ranked 3rd in the state with 86% math proficiency—suggests that demographics alone don't explain the outcome. Since spending and class sizes are adequate, the issue appears to be instructional effectiveness. Parents should ask the school how it plans to replicate its successful upper-grade practices in math and for male and low-income students.
