Summary

Beckley-Stratton Middle School is a public middle school in Beckley, West Virginia, serving 634 students in grades 6-8. It is part of the Raleigh County Schools district, which is ranked 13 out of 55 school districts in the state and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While Beckley-Stratton Middle School has a relatively low student-teacher ratio compared to nearby schools, it has consistently underperformed the district and state averages in academic proficiency, particularly in Mathematics and Science. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, the school's proficiency rates in these subjects were significantly lower than the district and state averages. The school's performance has also declined over time, dropping from 89th out of 172 West Virginia middle schools in 2015-2016 to 114th out of 168 in 2024-2025.

Interestingly, the nearby Trap Hill Middle School and Shady Spring Middle School, both part of the Raleigh County Schools district, have consistently outperformed Beckley-Stratton Middle School in academic proficiency and statewide rankings. This suggests that there may be opportunities for Beckley-Stratton to learn from the successful practices of its higher-performing counterparts. Additionally, the school's performance for students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds has been inconsistent, ranking as low as 137th out of 162 West Virginia middle schools in 2022-2023, which may contribute to the school's overall academic challenges.

Open Quote My child is in 8th grade. This year and this school is the worst I have seen since he has been in school. The majority (not all) of his teachers, and the principal as well, seem to take very little interest in helping those students who need some extra help (my child's typical grades range from A to C, so this is not about his grades). I have spoken with some teachers, as well as the principal, who, at times, are arrogant and portray a condescending attitude. Results speak for themselves - look at percent meeting standard on this website as well as on the WVDE ZOOMWV website. Very poor school. We have already decided to homeschool next year.
