Summary

Mountain View Elementary School in Hurricane, WV, is a mid-sized public school serving 457 students from Pre-Kindergarten through 5th grade as part of the highly-rated Putnam County Schools district, which ranks in the top 4% of districts statewide.

This school is on a strong upward trajectory. After ranking 118th in the state in the 2024-2025 school year, Mountain View surged to its best ranking in a decade—46th out of 355 schools—in 2025-2026. That's a remarkable jump of 72 positions in a single year. The school's standout strength is its exceptional support for Special Education students, who rank in the top 10% statewide (13th out of 158 schools). Mountain View also excels in English Language Arts (ELA), with a 71.5% proficiency rate that far exceeds both the district (62.3%) and state (47.6%) averages. Notably, the school achieves near-parity between male and female students, with both ranking in the 83rd-84th percentile statewide—a sign of consistent, effective instruction across the board.

While Mountain View is a solid choice, it sits in the shadow of its elite neighbor, West Teays Elementary (ranked 4th in the state), and Scott Teays Elementary (32nd). However, it outperforms several other nearby Putnam County schools, including George Washington Elementary (127th) and Conner Street Elementary (130th). The one area of concern is 5th grade, where math proficiency (45.2%) and science proficiency (39.7%) lag behind district averages—a potential transition issue worth monitoring. Overall, Mountain View is a strong, improving school with excellent literacy programs and outstanding special education support, making it a compelling option for families in the Hurricane area.

Open Quote Our new administration in 2015 is ruining a formerly fabulous school. We used to be clean and organized. Now we've got trash everywhere and chaos is the rule. Somehow they are paying a mom whose a professional volunteer to paint the walls? My girls are going to go live with my Mom across the river in a few weeks. Everyone used to be included and we seemed to always find a way to get along. Now we have factions and favorites and fights and lots of silliness. No one knows whats goin on til the last minute and "information" is power. Like little kids sayin "Nah nah nah nah nah nah I know some thing you don't know. The PTA used to be great but now are a joke. Teachers are stressed, behaving badly, always on their phones, and dressing inappropriately. The office staff act like they need lithium bc they love you one minute then bite your head off the next. Hate it. Just hate it. Close Quote
