Summary

Terra Alta/East Preston School in Terra Alta, WV, is a small PK-8 school serving 283 students in the rural mountain community of Preston County, part of the Preston County Schools district.

This school has a real bright spot: its 3rd-grade math program is exceptional. In the most recent testing year, 66.7% of 3rd graders scored proficient in math—a full 12 percentage points above the state average and better than the much higher-ranked Bruceton School (45%) just 16 miles away. The school also shows strong 6th-grade English Language Arts scores, beating both district and state averages. However, this early success doesn't carry through. The same students who excel in 3rd grade see math proficiency plummet to just 25% by 4th grade, and the school's overall math and ELA scores in grades 4-8 fall below state averages. Science is a relative strength, with scores essentially matching the state average. The school also has a persistent gender gap—girls consistently score much higher than boys—and struggles to support students from low-income backgrounds, who rank in the bottom quarter of the state.

With a 12.8:1 student-teacher ratio, class sizes are smaller than at nearby West Preston School or Kingwood Elementary, and per-student spending is higher than at Bruceton—yet those schools generally outperform Terra Alta. The school has earned a 2-star rating (32nd percentile statewide), a slight improvement from recent years. For parents, this is a school with genuine instructional strengths in early elementary grades and science, but one that faces clear challenges in maintaining momentum through middle school and closing achievement gaps for boys and low-income students.
