Summary

Pikeview Middle School in Princeton, WV, serves 502 students in grades 6-8 and is the largest of the three middle schools in Mercer County Schools, with a student-teacher ratio of 15:1.

Pikeview stands out as the clear academic leader within Mercer County. In the most recent school year, its proficiency rates significantly outpaced its district peers: 33.3% in math versus 19.3% at Bluefield Middle School and 24.1% at Princeton Middle School. In English Language Arts, Pikeview hit 44.7% proficiency, compared to 30.5% at Bluefield and 34.5% at Princeton. The school is also the only middle school in the district to earn a 3-star rating this year. A particular strength is 8th-grade math, where Pikeview's 42.5% proficiency rate not only crushes its district peers (both around 16%) but also exceeds the state average of 34.2%. This suggests the school does an excellent job preparing students for the transition to high school. Pikeview also shows consistent strength in serving special education students, maintaining above-average rankings for three consecutive years.

However, the school faces some challenges. Its overall state ranking dropped from 45th to 76th out of roughly 160 schools this year, and a gender gap has emerged, with female students now outperforming male students by a noticeable margin. Performance with low-income students has also been volatile, spiking to a 93rd-percentile ranking two years ago before falling back to the 51st percentile this year. Notably, Pikeview achieves these results while spending the least per student ($10,969) among its compared schools, suggesting efficient use of resources. For context, Shady Spring Middle School, just 18 miles away in Raleigh County Schools, ranks 20th statewide with much higher proficiency rates, highlighting the potential for further improvement within the region.

Open Quote The school that goes by the name of Pikeview Middle School is nothing less than sublime. The teachers are wonderful, very intelligent, and friendly. They treat all students with love and respect. My many peers can at times be ornery, but for the most part, they are absolutely splendid. The school's band is absolutely astounding. Every sports team is full of spirit and talent. While us students do not enjoy school in general, we can all agree that we couldn't pick a better school. Close Quote
