Summary

Lakewood Elementary School in Saint Albans, WV, serves 294 students in grades PK-5 as part of Kanawha County Schools, and has just posted its best state ranking in years—a dramatic jump from the bottom third of West Virginia elementary schools to the 51st percentile (3 stars) in 2025-2026.

The most exciting news for parents is the school's momentum. After several challenging years, Lakewood improved by 84 positions in the state rankings, with mathematics leading the charge. Math proficiency surged to 55.3%, well above the district average of 41.3% and outperforming nearby Bridgeview Elementary (38.6%), Central Elementary (40.3%), and Alban Elementary (45.5%). The school is particularly strong in 3rd and 4th grade math, where proficiency reaches 59-60%. Lakewood also shows exceptional results with students from low-income backgrounds, ranking in the 79th percentile statewide for this group, and strong support for special education students (71st percentile). English Language Arts is an area for growth, though 5th graders now exceed the district average in reading.

While Lakewood's improvement is impressive, it still trails the high-performing cluster of nearby schools like Andrews Heights Elementary (61.1% math), Nitro Elementary (62.7% math), and Rock Branch Elementary (79.8% math). Science scores have also been inconsistent, ranging from 14% to 30% over recent years. The big question is whether this year's gains represent a sustainable turnaround or a one-year spike. For parents, Lakewood now offers a solid middle-ground option with clear strengths in math and equity-focused teaching, making it a school worth watching closely in the coming years.

Open Quote I have a child who attends Lakewood and I have been very pleased with the teachers he has had, the amount of interest they take in making sure my child succeeds, and the communication I receive from the school. It has been my observation that the principal goes out of her way to be very involved in what goes on in the school, and she creates and maintains a very positive atmosphere. Close Quote
