Summary

North View Elementary School is a small PK-5 school in Clarksburg, WV, serving 242 students as part of the Harrison County Schools district. While the district itself earns a strong 4-star rating, North View currently holds a 1-star rating, ranking in the 17th percentile statewide—a position it has occupied for the past decade, though it has shown slight improvement this year.

The most significant challenge at North View is English Language Arts. Only 35.9% of students are proficient in ELA, which is nearly 12 points below the state average and 13.5 points below the district average. This gap is especially pronounced in 3rd grade, where just 21.1% of students meet proficiency standards in reading, compared to a 44.6% state average. By contrast, the school's math proficiency rate of 39.7% is essentially on par with both state and district averages. This split suggests that while math instruction is working, literacy needs urgent, targeted attention. Interestingly, the school's closest neighbor, Victory Elementary School (just 1.1 miles away), shows the opposite pattern—strong math but weaker reading—suggesting the two schools could learn from each other's approaches.

There are some encouraging signs. Students in the Special Education subgroup have improved dramatically over the past three years, jumping from the 4th to the 34th percentile. However, a notable gender gap exists: female students rank in the 42nd percentile while male students rank in the 14th percentile. The school also spends more per student ($13,069) and maintains a lower student-teacher ratio (10:1) than many higher-performing schools nearby, such as Johnson Elementary School (89th percentile). This indicates the issue isn't resources—it's about finding the right instructional strategies, particularly for early literacy and for male students.

Open Quote NO recess, principal feels a playground would be a nuisance. NO extra curicular activities, no air conditioner in lunch room or library, and it gets HOT in those rooms. One of the 1st grade teachers is appauling, and principal doesn't care. Office staff are rude. Close Quote
