Maysville Elementary School

Maysville Elementary School is a small, rural school in Maysville, WV, serving 203 students in grades PK-6 as part of Grant County Schools. Despite its modest size, this school has built a strong reputation, particularly for its remarkable success with students from low-income backgrounds—a group that consistently scores in the top 15% statewide.

The school's biggest academic strength is English Language Arts, where 62.1% of students meet proficiency standards. That's more than 14 percentage points above both the district (46.9%) and state (47.6%) averages. In fact, Maysville's ELA scores are more than double those at nearby New Creek Primary School (27.3%) and nearly three times higher than Elk Garden School (23.1%). Math tells a more interesting story: while 3rd graders start below state averages (31.8% vs. 54.4%), by 6th grade Maysville students surge to 57.9% proficiency—more than double the rate at Petersburg Elementary School (25.8%) and well above the state average (35.4%). This suggests the school's math instruction becomes increasingly effective as students move up through the grades.

Maysville also stands out for how efficiently it uses resources. With a student-teacher ratio of 15.1:1 and per-student spending of $11,284, it outperforms schools that spend significantly more, like Elk Garden ($17,755 per student). The school's overall state ranking has dipped recently—from the 80th percentile to the 65th—and 5th grade science scores have declined. However, the school's proven track record with economically disadvantaged students (84th percentile this year) and its exceptional literacy program suggest a strong foundation. For parents seeking a school where dedicated teaching makes a real difference, especially for students facing economic challenges, Maysville Elementary remains a standout choice in West Virginia's eastern panhandle.
