Summary

Central City Elementary School is a public elementary school in Huntington, West Virginia, serving 419 students in grades PK-5 and part of the Cabell County Schools district.

Despite the school's relatively low student-teacher ratio and higher-than-average per-student spending, Central City Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom half of West Virginia elementary schools over the past 10 years. The school's performance on state assessments is significantly below the Cabell County and West Virginia averages across all grade levels and subject areas, particularly in 5th-grade Math and Science. The school also struggles to support the academic achievement of various student subgroups, with its African American and Hispanic students performing especially poorly compared to their peers statewide.

Interestingly, nearby schools within the Cabell County district, such as Guyandotte Elementary and Hite Saunders Elementary, generally outperform Central City Elementary on state assessments and have higher rankings. Hite Saunders Elementary, in particular, stands out as a high-performing school, ranking 8th out of 355 West Virginia elementary schools in 2024-2025. Addressing the challenges faced by Central City Elementary will require a comprehensive review of the school's educational practices and targeted interventions to support its underperforming student groups.

Open Quote Very young teachers just learning, 1st or 2nd year teachers after being subs etc.. Discipline is all over the place! Very inconsistent and alot of very immature decisions! I know everyone has to start somewhere but my child has been there since Kindergarten (5 years) and "every" teacher with the exception of one was a "first year teacher". Just seems like my child is paying to "train" these new teachers at the cost of his education! Close Quote
