Calhoun County Schools is a small, rural district in West Virginia serving approximately 789 students across three schools—two elementary schools (PK-4) and one combined middle/high school (5-12)—and currently holds a 2-star rating, ranking 39th out of 54 districts in the state.

There is a stark contrast between the elementary and secondary levels in this district. Pleasant Hill School is the clear standout, earning a 4-star rating for three consecutive years and ranking in the top 25% of all West Virginia elementary schools. Its math proficiency is exceptional at 72.9%, which is more than double the district average and nearly triple that of Calhoun Middle/High School. Arnoldsburg School sits in the middle, with a 2-star rating and math proficiency near the state average, though its ranking fluctuates significantly year to year. The biggest concern is Calhoun Middle/High School, which ranks in the bottom 4% of high schools statewide and has a 1-star rating. While its graduation rate is an impressive 98.3%—well above the state average—academic proficiency is critically low, especially in math (26.4%) and science (21%).

The most striking finding is the dramatic academic decline that occurs between 5th and 6th grade at Calhoun Middle/High School. Students arrive in 5th grade performing above state averages in math (67.5%) and ELA (60%), but by 6th grade, proficiency collapses by more than 40 points in both subjects. This suggests a significant problem with the transition to middle school, whether due to curriculum misalignment, instructional quality, or lack of support. Additionally, the high school spends the least per student ($11,621) despite serving the most challenging grade levels, while the top-performing elementary school spends the most ($14,452). For parents, this district offers excellent early education options, particularly at Pleasant Hill, but raises serious questions about the secondary experience and whether students are truly prepared for college or career, despite high graduation rates.
