River Falls Public Montessori Academy is a PK–6 elementary school with 189 students in River Falls, Wisconsin, part of the River Falls School District, which ranks in the top quarter of districts statewide. It is the smallest school in its comparison group, and the only one that serves sixth grade.

Math is the defining issue. Across grades 3–5 in 2025-2026, average math proficiency was 43.4%, versus 67.0% district-wide and 53.1% statewide — about 24 points below its own district and 10 below the state. Chronic absenteeism has improved dramatically, from 23.0% in 2021-22 to 9.0% in 2024-25 — below the state rate, though still the highest among nearby schools such as North Hudson Elementary and Malone Elementary. Outcomes also differ sharply by group: male students rank in the 67th–72nd percentile while female students sit in the low 30s, a gap that has not narrowed, while special-education students rank above the school's overall standing. The school also spends the least per student ($12,118) and has the highest student-teacher ratio (17.7) in the comparison set. Because grade cohorts are small, single-year swings are noisy; the multi-year math pattern matters most.

Montessori embraces an educational approach that focuses on exploiting the child's curiosity, and helping the individual excel in their strengths. This includes broadening the student's other talents to keep them on target with age-specific skills. The teachers, students, parents and community are among the most creative and intelligent.
