Summary

Monona Grove High is a 9–12 comprehensive high school in Monona, Wisconsin, a small suburban community just outside Madison, and with roughly 1,170 students it is the largest school in the Monona Grove School District. Its ranking history shows a long slide followed by a sharp rebound: from the 95th percentile in 2015-16 down to a low of the 65th percentile in 2023-24, then back up to the 83rd percentile (4 stars) in 2025-26 — its strongest showing in eight years. Two caveats: the comparison pool grew that year, and many nearby schools rose at the same time, so part of the gain reflects a broader ranking shift rather than pure school improvement.

Where the school looks strongest is consistency. Graduation rates have stayed in a tight 94.8–96.3% band for five straight years, always above the state, and the dropout rate of 0.1% runs roughly one-tenth of Wisconsin's. Tenth graders score above the state average in all four tested subjects — science by about 16 points, math by about 13, social studies by about 9, and English language arts by about 6 — with math climbing from below the state level in 2022-23 to well above it. Special education students rank at the 86th percentile, above the school's own overall result. All of this comes at $16,789 per student, the lowest cost among comparable comprehensive high schools nearby.

The clearest concerns are attendance and gaps between groups. Chronic absenteeism is 19.5%, above both the district (16.7%) and the state (17.3%), and Hispanic students (37th percentile) and English language learners (35th percentile) rank well below the school's other measured groups. The natural comparison is McFarland High, 4.4 miles away with similar demographics, which ranks in the 91st percentile with higher social studies, math, and science scores and absenteeism of 12.5%. LaFollette High is less than a mile away but serves a very different population, and the district's alternative option, Monona Grove Liberal Arts, ranks nearly as high as the main high school despite serving far fewer students.
