Summary

Maplewood Middle is a grades 7–8 school in Menasha, WI, serving 676 students in the Menasha Joint School District, where 55.92% of students qualified for free or reduced-price lunch in 2024–2025. It ranks 449th of 643 Wisconsin schools (30th percentile, 2 stars), ahead of its district's 23rd percentile but still in the bottom third statewide. Its best recent year was 2016–2017 (42nd percentile); since then it has hovered between the 28th and 36th percentiles.

Academically, Maplewood Middle scores below state averages in every tested subject but close to district averages. Math is the relative strength: 8th-grade math was 51.23% proficient, above the district and only 2.44 points below the state, and 7th-grade math was near the district as well. English language arts is the weaker spot at about 42% in both grades, roughly 12–13 points below state, and 8th-grade social studies trails the state by 14.14 points. Science rebounded sharply, from 34.43% in 2024–2025 to 46.08%. Compared with nearby schools, Maplewood trails Gerritts Middle, Neenah Middle School, and Einstein Middle, but its math results beat Wilson Middle, Kaleidoscope Academy, and Madison Middle, and it scores better overall than Wilson despite similar poverty and spending.

Subgroup results are uneven. Multi-racial students ranked in the 60th percentile and African American students in the 50th, while English language learners (17th), low-income students (21st), Hispanic students (21st), and White students (29th) ranked below median. Special education fell from the 67th percentile in 2023–2024 to 38th in 2025–2026. Attendance has improved substantially, with chronic absenteeism dropping from 24.6% in 2021–2022 to 17.9% — close to the state's 17.3% and better than Wilson and Kaleidoscope but worse than most higher-performing neighbors. Dropout rates are essentially zero. Despite favorable resources — $15,474 per student and the lowest student-teacher ratio (11.9) among nearby schools — achievement remains below state and most neighbors, leaving ELA, social studies, and support for English language learners and low-income students as the clearest priorities.
