Summary

Olson Middle is a grades 6–8 school with 240 students in Mauston, a small city in central Wisconsin, and is part of the Mauston School District. In 2025–2026 it ranked 402nd of 643 Wisconsin middle schools — the 37th percentile, with 2 stars — which is above its own district's overall standing of 357th of 432 districts (17th percentile, 1 star) but below the state midpoint. About 55% of students were eligible for free or reduced-price lunch in 2024–2025.

Olson's clearest strength is eighth grade. In 2025–2026, its 8th graders were 60.53% proficient in math — above the state's 53.67% — and 68.42% in social studies, above the state's 64.63%, with 8th-grade math above the state average for four straight years. Those results beat Webb Middle, Adams-Friendship Middle and Necedah Middle, and Olson's 8th-grade math also topped Wonewoc-Center Junior High (38.10%). The weaker area is earlier English language arts: 6th-grade ELA was 39.19% and 7th-grade ELA 34.21%, both well below the state (54.95% and 55.33%) and behind Wisconsin Dells Middle, Webb and Wonewoc. Olson did edge Wisconsin Dells in 6th-grade math (47.30% vs. 43.08%) and Royall Intermediate in 6th-grade math (47.30% vs. 33.33%).

Chronic absenteeism was 14.1% in 2024–2025 — better than the state (17.3%) and district (16.6%), and better than Wisconsin Dells and Adams-Friendship, though Webb, Wonewoc, Necedah and Royall all reported lower rates. Olson spends $15,714 per student, more than Wisconsin Dells, Webb, Wonewoc and Royall but less than Adams-Friendship ($18,404) and Necedah ($17,394), and its student–teacher ratio of 13.9 is larger than most neighbors — yet its results generally exceed Adams-Friendship's and Necedah's. The school is recovering: its percentile rose from 26th in 2023–2024 to 33rd and then 37th, below its 2021–2022 peak of 55th. Low-income students' effectiveness ranking improved to the 31st percentile.
