Benton Middle

Benton Middle is a very small public middle school in Benton, Wisconsin, serving just 31 students in grades 7–8 as part of the Benton School District. It is the smallest middle school in its area by a wide margin: nearby Cuba City Middle, Southwestern Wisconsin Community Middle, Shullsburg Junior High, Platteville Middle and Potosi Middle enroll between 66 and 417 students. Benton also does not serve 6th grade, while most nearby middle schools serve grades 6–8.

Benton Middle ranked 265th of 643 Wisconsin schools in 2025–2026 (59th percentile, 3 stars), down from 167th of 628 (73rd percentile, 4 stars) the year before. That overall dip masks a striking split between grades. The 8th grade exceeded the state in all four tested subjects — 61.11% proficient in ELA, 72.22% in mathematics, 83.33% in social studies and 83.33% in science — and led nearby middle schools in mathematics, social studies and science. The 7th grade, by contrast, was at 31.58% proficient in both ELA and mathematics, below the state and the lowest among nearby middle schools; its ELA score was 68.42% the year before. With roughly 15–20 students per grade, a handful of students can move these percentages substantially.

Benton spent $35,964 per student in 2024–2025, more than twice what most nearby districts spent, which in a district this small can reflect fixed costs rather than classroom funding alone. Economic need is relatively high, with 51.61% of students eligible for free or reduced lunch. Chronic absenteeism fell to 9.7%, better than the state's 17.3% and improved from 23.3% in 2021–2022, though it remains above Potosi, Cuba City and Southwestern. Subgroup results are mixed, with low-income students improving to above-average standing in recent years. The key question is whether the 7th grade dip is a one-cohort fluctuation or the start of a broader decline.
