Ferber Elementary

Summary:

Ferber Elementary is a public elementary school in Appleton, Wisconsin, serving 611 students from pre-kindergarten to 6th grade as part of the Appleton Area School District. The school has a diverse student population, with a racial makeup that has shifted in recent years, and it generally performs well academically, ranking in the top half of Wisconsin elementary schools.

Ferber Elementary's academic performance is above the district and state averages in both English Language Arts and Mathematics, with particularly strong performance among its 6th-grade students. The school's Hispanic students also excel, ranking 16th out of 290 Wisconsin elementary schools, while its White students perform well, ranking 173rd out of 715. However, the school's English Language Learner (ELL) students and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds have struggled, ranking in the bottom quarter of Wisconsin elementary schools in these subgroups. Additionally, Ferber Elementary has seen a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 4.4% in 2018-2019 to 9.3% in 2022-2023.

Compared to nearby schools, Ferber Elementary generally outperforms Highlands Elementary and Columbus Elementary in academic performance, but lags behind the higher-performing Houdini Elementary and Classical School, particularly in the upper grade levels. Addressing the school's challenges in supporting its ELL and low-income students, as well as the rising chronic absenteeism rate, will be important for Ferber Elementary to continue improving its overall performance and outcomes for all students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My son has attended Ferber for the last 3 years. We have nothing but good things to say about the school. 2/3 of his teachers have been excellent while the 3rd was good but not great. The facility is very nice with a large library, good computer lab, and adequate gym. The lunches are even decent. Also, the YMCA ran before and after school care programs are outstanding for those working families. This is a gem of a school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
