Summary:

Monticello School District is a small Wisconsin district serving roughly 289 students across three schools that together cover PK–12: Monticello Elementary (PK–5, 131 students), Monticello Middle (6–8, 58 students), and Monticello High (9–12, 100 students). The district itself is ranked 306 of 432 in Wisconsin, at the 29th percentile with 1 star, while its individual schools' 2025–2026 ratings range from the 35th to the 50th percentile with 2–3 stars, so the district rating looks lower than the current school ratings suggest.

Each school looks different. Monticello Middle has the lowest student-teacher ratio (8.0), the highest per-student spending ($22,240), and the lowest free/reduced lunch rate (31.03%), and it posted the strongest recent spike — 72nd percentile and 4 stars in 2024–2025 — before settling to 50th percentile and 3 stars in 2025–2026. Monticello High has the highest free/reduced lunch rate (40%) and student-teacher ratio (9.6), but also a 100% graduation rate and a 0% dropout rate. Monticello Elementary has the best attendance, with chronic absenteeism of 12.5% versus the state's 17.3%, and the lowest per-student spending at $18,632.

Bright spots include grade-5 ELA at the elementary (72% vs. state 53.63%), grades 6 and 7 ELA at the middle (68.42% each), and ACT ELA at the high school (55% vs. state 48.47%). Concerns include elementary grade-3 ELA (35.29% vs. state 52.08%), grade-5 math (32% vs. 51.81%), middle grade-6 math (31.58% vs. 53.60%), and a sharp drop in high school 10th-grade Social Studies from 86.36% to 21.88%. With enrollments this small, year-to-year swings tend to be large.
