Summary

Eckstein Middle School is a large, highly-regarded public school serving grades 6-8 with about 1,024 students in Seattle's Northeast neighborhood, consistently ranking among the top 5% of all middle schools in Washington state.

The school demonstrates exceptional and balanced academic strength, with particularly high science proficiency that far exceeds district and state averages. This excellence is consistent across most student groups, and the school achieves these top-tier results with mid-range per-student funding compared to some nearby schools like Robert Eagle Staff Middle School. Eckstein forms part of a notable "excellence corridor" with the similarly high-performing Hamilton International Middle School, located just a few miles away within the Seattle School District No. 1. It also holds its own against top schools in other districts, such as the Environmental & Adventure School in the Lake Washington School District.

While Eckstein's overall performance is stellar, there are significant performance gaps for some student subgroups that the school is working to address. The contrast with a closer school, Edmonds S. Meany Middle School, which has much lower proficiency rates, highlights how outcomes can vary dramatically even within the same district. For over a decade, Eckstein has been a model of sustained academic excellence, effective resource use, and strong leadership in the region.

Open Quote I attend Eckstein and it is THE BOMB. The teachers rock and there are a ton of smart kids. If you want you're kid to go to a good public middle school, Eckstein is a good choice. There's also a really good music program at Eckstein. The bands, choirs, and orchestras are all REALLY good. And the music teachers, are of course, EXCELLENT. Close Quote
