Summary

Kenmore Elementary is a public PK-5 school serving 396 students in the highly-regarded Northshore School District in Kenmore, WA, and it stands out for delivering strong academic results while serving a student population with greater economic needs than many of its neighboring schools.

Academically, the school consistently outperforms Washington state averages, with over 61% of students proficient in English Language Arts compared to 53% statewide, and it has shown impressive, steady improvement in recent years. What makes Kenmore particularly notable is its context: it serves a significantly higher percentage of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch (over 41%) compared to nearby schools like Moorlands Elementary (10.71%) or Lockwood Elementary (16.57%), yet it maintains competitive test scores. This demonstrates the school's effectiveness, as it achieves solid outcomes—such as a 70th percentile ranking for Hispanic student performance—with a fraction of the per-student spending of some district peers.

The school's trajectory is positive, having climbed from a 3-star to a 4-star rating and improving its overall percentile ranking significantly since 2021. While the school excels in areas like 3rd-grade math and 5th-grade science, it has identified opportunities for growth in 4th-grade math. Operating within the high-performing Northshore School District provides a strong foundation, and Kenmore Elementary represents a compelling case of a school successfully supporting a diverse community and showing consistent year-over-year progress.

Open Quote The new Principal Melissa Riley is fantastic and we love the teachers here! Had an opportunity to switch schools but we opted to stay since it's a great fit for our family. School ratings really don't do the school justice. Close Quote

Open Quote Our family has been at Kenmore for the last 8 years--we love the school, especially the teachers. They are committed, very competent, and treat all the kids as individuals. The test scores certainly don't reflect the quality of teaching but it does look like they are coming up for the most part. There is good diversity in the school (economic and ethnic) which we think is an asset. Relative to the rest of the District, class sizes are small and the Title 1 status gives them a lot of extra resources that other schools don't have. The PTA is strong and offers a fantastic selection of after school programming and their foreign language program on early release Wednesdays is a stroke of brilliance! The only complaints are that the gym desperately needs a new floor and the soccer field could be nicer, but the playground is really nice and the surroundings (the school Arboretum, Swamp Creek Park, and the expansive campus) are beautiful and make for a nice setting. A new principal is starting this year (2014) and we are excited to see what changes she makes to the school--it's definitely on it's way up! Close Quote
