Summary

Highline Public Schools Virtual Academy is a public alternative and virtual school in Seattle serving 208 students in prekindergarten through grade 12 within the Highline School District. The school serves a relatively high-need student population, with 64.9% of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch in 2024–25. Its student-teacher ratio was 16.1 to 1, and per-student spending was $20,182 in 2023–24. Because virtual and alternative programs often serve students seeking flexibility or re-engagement, results should be considered alongside the school’s enrollment patterns and student needs.

The most serious concerns involve staying on track to graduate. The 2024–25 graduation rate was 56.4%, compared with 81.8% in the district and 82.6% statewide, while the dropout rate reached 25.6%. Graduation has declined from 72.9% in 2021–22, and dropout rates have risen each year in the available data. Academically, English language arts is a relative strength: 40.38% of students were proficient in 2025–26, above the district’s 34.68% but below the state’s 52.81%. Science proficiency was 34.55%, while math was the clearest weakness at 16.35%. Science has improved substantially since 2022–23, but math has remained persistently low. Reported grade-level results vary, with stronger ELA performance in grades 8 and 10; some math results were suppressed and are unknown, not zero.

Compared with nearby alternative programs, Cascade Parent Partnership Program had a nearly identical graduation rate of 56.6% but stronger proficiency in ELA, math, and science; its dropout rate was higher at 31.6%. Bellevue Digital Discovery reported a 64.0% graduation rate and stronger results in all three subjects, although it serves a much less economically disadvantaged population. Kent Laboratory Academy also posted considerably higher academic results. Rainier Valley Leadership Academy had lower proficiency rates than Highline in every subject. Overall, the key priorities appear to be reducing dropouts, improving credit completion and re-engagement, and providing targeted math support while building on the school’s literacy strengths.
