Summary

Curlew Elementary & High School is a small alternative public school in the geographically isolated community of Curlew, Washington, serving 234 students from pre-K through 12th grade through the Curlew School District. Its small enrollment, wide grade span, and reported student-teacher ratio of 12.8 may allow for more individualized support than is typical in a larger school. In 2024–25, 55.13% of students qualified for free or reduced-price lunch, and per-student spending was $25,369 in 2023–24.

The clearest recent strength is graduation. The rate reached 85.0% in 2024–25, above Washington’s 82.6% and up sharply from 38.6% in 2021–22. However, the school’s earlier reported dropout rates were very high, including 45.4% in 2021–22; newer school-level dropout rates were not reported, so it is not yet clear whether that improvement has continued. Academic results are mixed. In 2025–26, science proficiency was 55.56%, higher than the state’s 50.95%, making science the school’s strongest tested subject. ELA proficiency was 30.26% and math proficiency was 29.87%, both below state results. Sixth- and eighth-grade math exceeded state rates, while third-grade ELA and math were each 18.75%. Several grade-level results were suppressed by the state and should be treated as unknown, not zero.

The only listed nearby comparison is Republic Parent Partner, about 17 miles away, with 199 students in grades K–12 and part of the Republic School District. In 2024–25, Republic had higher ELA and science proficiency, while math was essentially equal; in 2025–26, Curlew’s math result was slightly higher, while Republic’s ELA result was suppressed. Curlew also reported a much higher free- or reduced-price lunch rate than Republic’s 19.1% and substantially higher spending, but Republic’s reported 99.5 student-teacher ratio may reflect a different staffing definition. Overall, Curlew’s graduation gains and science performance are encouraging, while sustained improvement in ELA, math, and dropout outcomes remains important.
