Summary:
The Stanwood-Camano School District has three middle schools serving grades 6–8 in the Stanwood-Camano area: Port Susan Middle School, Stanwood Middle School, and Lincoln Academy. The two comprehensive middle schools enroll about 1,058 students combined, or approximately 98% of the district’s middle-school students, while Lincoln Academy is a small 20-student program.
Port Susan Middle School is the clear academic leader. In 2025–26, it exceeded both district and state proficiency rates in English language arts, math, and science, with 63.30% of students proficient in ELA, 52.45% in math, and 56.67% in science. It ranked 94th out of 514 Washington middle schools, placing it in the 82nd percentile, and its ranking has improved steadily in recent years. Seventh grade was a particular strength, including 70.25% proficiency in ELA. Math, especially sixth-grade math, was its comparatively weaker area but still remained above district and state results.
Stanwood Middle School currently trails Port Susan in every reported subject, but it showed the district’s most dramatic recent improvement. From 2024–25 to 2025–26, its proficiency increased by 10.14 points in ELA, 12.35 points in math, and 10.50 points in science; its ranking rose from the 29th to the 61st percentile. Math remains the main challenge at both large schools, while seventh grade is generally the strongest. Lincoln Academy has suppressed current assessment results because of its small enrollment, so its academic performance cannot be fairly compared with the other schools. It does have a lower student–teacher ratio and higher per-student spending, but those figures should not be treated as measures of academic effectiveness.
