Lyman C. Hunt Middle School

Public Grades 6-8
Summary

Lyman C. Hunt Middle School is a public middle school in Burlington, Vermont, serving 329 students in grades 6-8. It is part of the Burlington School District, which is ranked 22 out of 72 districts in the state and has a 4-star rating.

Academically, Lyman C. Hunt Middle School has shown mixed performance compared to state averages. While 8th-grade English Language Arts (ELA) proficiency was above the state average, 6th and 7th-grade ELA, as well as all three grade levels in Mathematics, fell below state benchmarks. The school's 8th-grade Science proficiency was also slightly below the state average. However, the school has demonstrated strengths in serving specific student populations, with African American and English Language Learner (ELL) students ranking among the top 2-3 schools in Vermont.

Interestingly, the school faces challenges with its low-income student population, ranking in the bottom 37-40 schools in Vermont for this subgroup. Despite this, Lyman C. Hunt Middle School has a relatively low student-teacher ratio and higher spending per student compared to some nearby schools, such as Edmunds Middle School. This suggests potential opportunities for improvement through targeted interventions and resource allocation, particularly to address the needs of its low-income students.

Open Quote YOUR CHILD DESERVES BETTER!!!!!! This is not a school that I would recommend going to. The majority of the teachers have taught me almost nothing in the 3 years I have been going here, they are extremely disorganized and spend more time making fun slideshows than teaching the kids. As far as the political demographic of the school it is very liberal, which is understandable due to the fact that the area is mainly democratic yet it has the feeling that anyone with opposing views is an outcast and the school does nothing to prevent this. The only reason I give it 2 stars is that there are a few teachers that are amazing and taught me quite a bit. Overall I would not recommend going to this school. Close Quote

Open Quote This school does not have consistent discipline guidelines used across all students. Where policies are in place, the school does not follow these for example, having a student call home to sending a notice home when a student receives a detention. Close Quote
