Summary:

Zip code 23235 is home to two public middle schools — Manchester Middle and Providence Middle — both part of Chesterfield County Public Schools and serving grades 6 through 8 with enrollments of 1,109 and 1,033 students, respectively. Both schools serve a high-poverty population, with about 75% of students at each qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, and both rank near the bottom of Virginia middle schools, placing 376th and 380th out of 416 in the 2025–2026 statewide rankings.

Manchester Middle stands out as the higher-ranked school and the stronger performer in English reading and advanced math. It posted a perfect 100% proficiency rate on 7th-grade Algebra I and a 96.43% proficiency rate on Geometry in 2025–2026, and it outperformed Providence Middle in every grade-level reading test. However, Providence counters with stronger on-grade-level mathematics, beating Manchester in 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade math, and it improved sharply in 8th-grade Algebra I, jumping from 60.41% to 79.19% proficient while Manchester fell from 88.56% to 67.95%. Providence also has a more favorable student-teacher ratio (13.6 vs. 15.1) and higher per-pupil spending ($8,602 vs. $8,190).

Despite nearly identical poverty levels, the two schools show distinct performance profiles. Both struggle with chronic absenteeism — 22.4% at Manchester and 26.0% at Providence, well above the district rate of 16.1% — and both have weak grade-level math and science scores. In 8th-grade general math, only 15.38% of Manchester students and 25% of Providence students were proficient, while advanced Earth Science proficiency reached 90.99% and 95%, respectively. Providence has been more stable in overall ranking, improving slightly from 389th in 2023–2024 to 380th in 2025–2026, while Manchester declined from 337th to 376th. The unweighted average across all 2025–2026 tests gives Providence a slim edge at 61.0% proficient versus Manchester's 59.8%.
