Open Quote Both of my daughters attended MCS, the most recent one from 2008 to 2010. I can't say enough great things about MCS. It's a wonderful school, the teachers and staff are very caring, and I always feel welcome. The facilities are large, quiet, clean and bright, which is ideally suited for the Montessori style. Whenever I visit the classroom, the children seem happy and very interested in the "work" they are doing. If you are looking for a school for your 3, 4 or 5 year old, I would highly recommend MCS. Open Quote I have two kids currently attending MCS and have been extremely impressed. All students appear to be very happy and are not limited in what they can learn. Music and French classes, art projects, and playground time complement the program. The student-teacher ratio is outstanding. It is clear that all of the teachers are of the highest caliber and enjoy teaching. The administrator and the all-volunteer, parent-run board is comprised of individuals who truly care about MCS and the kids. Tuition is highly competitive (some might say that it is underpriced) for what the children receive. I wish that MCS had grades beyond KG. We are currently looking for an MCS-like school at the elementary level for our oldest child and have yet to find it. To sum it up: MCS has been a perfect school for our two kids. I would describe it as a peaceful school with an ideal learning environment. If you are looking for an outstanding school at an outstanding price in Herndon, MCS must be considered. Close Quote

Open Quote I have one child graduating from MCS this Spring and another child entering this Fall. I looked at serveral Montessori schools this winter since we moved farther away from this school & the drive was killing me. After visiting 5 different Montessori schools closer to my new house, I was not nearly as impressed as I was with MCS. I ended up enrolling my middle child and will continue to deal with the commute because the school is worth it. I could not find another school that even came close. The teachers are all wonderful--they have all been there forever. My daughter has had nothing but good experiences and I really like the staff-they are helpful and truly care about my child. Not only are they nice but my daughter has learned so much & seems advanced for her age. Close Quote

Open Quote After visiting several Montessori schools in the area while pregnant with my first child, I toured Montessori Country School. WOW! I immediately felt at home in such a quiet, nurturing environment where everything had it's place and the children were so involved in their own learning that they hardly noticed my presence. It reminded me of my own Montessori pre-school growing up. The decision was made then and there and never once have I looked back or reconsidered. The teachers and staff are phenomenal. My kids are extremely happy and excelling in all subjects, and getting great social interaction and learning respect for themselves and others and the environment. I have 2 kids in the school now, and one to come. My oldest (now in KG there) lives for math and music. My second child has flourished in this environment and still has several years to go. I can't say enough about the teachers and the entire school. The school sells itself, and because of the non profit status and the environment there, allows and encourages parent involvement in many ways, which is one of the things I love about it. If you are looking for a school that will allow your child to realize their potential and love learning in a non competitive environment during the critical preschool years, you need to check out Montessori Country School. Open Quote Four years ago, I began an extensive, exhaustive search of dozens of preschools in the Reston/Oak Hill/Herndon/Sterling/Ashburn area. To my surprise and delight, I found a rare jewel in Herndon, VA: Montessori Country School (MCS). I turned my search to Montessori schools after finding other settings too chaotic and loud. I could offer social play opportunities during playgroups/outings, and I wanted an environment were my children would enjoy their day and begin to develop a love of learning – this is the true gift of a Montessori education.

Now, my son is graduating from MCS kindergarten and my daughter is in her 2nd year at the school. MCS has exceeded my expectations in every way offering outstanding academic progress and a nurturing environment. My children LOVE their school; it is more like a family experience. I have made lasting friendships with parents as well. If you are looking for a smaller school environment you should definitely take a tour of MCS and learn more about the Montessori teaching philosophy.

All the lead teachers at MCS are certified, veteran Montessori professionals. With 4 classes, and a staff of 12 they have over 130 years of combined experience at this school!! It is extremely rare to find such talent and dedication.

If you want to instill in your children a love of learning, respect for others, independence, self-confidence, and leadership you MUST visit this school!! Close Quote

From the Teachers to the Assistants to the Administration, the quality is exceptional! The curriculum includes not only an outstanding Montessori curriculum but also enrichment classes in both French and Music. The campus includes spacious, bright and incredibly well-equipped classrooms; two side yards providing gardening opportunities, picnic tables, and butterfly gardens; and a great big playground with new equipment. There are many opportunities for parents to get involved on a volunteer basis. This is an exceptional non-profit school with an excellent reputation over the past 39 years. You should check it out for yourself! Close Quote

Open Quote Over the past several years this has slowly turned into a more of a traditional school than a montessori. The teachers get no yearly training to ensure they are up to date. The Administrator of the school has been the cause of many problems within the parent community of the school and is slowing ensuring the the good qualified teachers are run out of the school. The Administrator will sell a good tale but really doesn't know anything about Montessori. Since there is no one to ensure quality in the school or to help teachers when they have a problem the good teachers can not keep a true Montessori environment. When a montessori teacher is sick there is no-one but an aide in the classroom to teach the children and while the aide have been with some of the teachers for a number of years they have not been educated in the Montessori methods and therefore really shouldn't be giving lessons to the children. I could go on and on about the problems of the school. It is enough to say if you are looking for a good montessori look elsewhere. Close Quote

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
