Jackson Memorial Elementary is a small PK-5 school in Austinville, Virginia, serving 229 students as part of Wythe County Public Schools, a high-achieving district ranked 13th out of 131 Virginia districts. The school itself, however, has slipped from a peak of the 78th percentile in 2018–2019 to the 50th percentile (2 stars) in 2025–2026, placing it behind every same-district peer in this comparison: Max Meadows (74th), Sheffey (64th), and Spiller (55th).

Families will find plenty of positives. Chronic absenteeism has plummeted from 28.9% in 2021–2022 to just 4.6% in 2024–2025 — one of the best attendance rates in the area, behind only Gladeville (1.7%) and Fancy Gap (2.6%). Math is a genuine strength: all three grade levels exceeded state proficiency in 2025–2026 (79.5% in 3rd, 80.6% in 4th, 74.1% in 5th). The school is also notably effective for its economically disadvantaged students — 81.7% of the student body — who rank in the 79th percentile statewide. This is especially impressive given that Jackson spends less per student ($8,679) than Spiller, Sheffey, or Max Meadows.

The challenges are just as clear. 5th-grade science proficiency dropped to 59.3% in 2025–2026, well below the district (71.3%) and state (68.8%), and far behind Max Meadows (84%) and Sheffey (81.3%). 3rd-grade reading has hovered near 60%, roughly 13–15 points below the district, though 5th-grade reading has been much stronger in past years. There is also a persistent gender gap, with boys ranking in the 69th percentile statewide while girls sit in the 37th. With only 30–40 students per grade, scores can swing dramatically year to year. Still, the school's strong attendance and district foundation make it a solid mid-pack option for area families.
