Summary

Larrymore Elementary is a PK–5 school in Norfolk, VA, serving 584 students in the Norfolk City Public Schools district, and it stands out as a strong academic performer relative to its immediate neighbors.

In a district ranked 112th out of 131 in Virginia, Larrymore earns a 47th percentile state ranking (589th out of 1,111 schools). That places it well above most nearby schools: Little Creek Elementary and Tanners Creek Elementary rank in the bottom 10%, Bay View Elementary is at the 17th percentile, and Mary Calcott Elementary sits at the 42nd percentile. Only Tarrallton Elementary, at the 64th percentile, ranks higher. Academically, Larrymore posts math and reading scores well above district averages. Third-grade math proficiency is 80.56% versus the district’s 58.41%, and 5th-grade math is 81.69% versus 58.27%. Reading also exceeds the district in every grade, with 3rd-grade reading at 74.65% versus 56.04%. Chronic absenteeism is just 8.4% — far better than the district’s 17.9% and nearly identical to Tarrallton’s 8.2%. Larrymore does this with lower per-pupil spending ($9,281) and larger class sizes than many peers, and it even beats Bayside Elementary in Virginia Beach City Public Schools, which spends $16,241 per student, on most SOL tests.

Larrymore’s strongest subgroup results are among English Language Learners (79th percentile) and African American students (66th percentile), and economically disadvantaged students also outperform the school’s overall rank. Areas to watch include a gender gap (males rank 55th percentile, females 36th) and a sharp decline in military-connected student performance to the 1st percentile in 2025-2026. The school has stabilized near the state median but has not yet regained its pre-pandemic top-quartile standing. With strong attendance and math results, Larrymore has the foundation to recover further if it addresses gaps in 5th-grade reading and science.

Open Quote My child who has ADHD attends this school currently (2012) and the experience at this school for both of my children as well as my husband and I has been nothing short of miraculous! Prior to attending this school, we experienced two Norfolk private schools and while those schools were not bad in terms of education, they were expensive and a little "snooty" as well. Larrymore's staff from Kindergarten which includes Ms. Morgan, Ms. Williams, Ms. Leafe, and Ms. Tompanis along with all the special ed staff in between has been incredible. Each teacher, assistant teacher, and administrative staff person that I have had dealings with has been supportive, engaged, and completely committed to ensure the best education. My son has had a total transformation coming to this school. He went from limited reading even after tutoring and private schooling to becoming a fluent reader. I have always felt in the 4 years of attendance here, that my kids and us as parents were treated with respect, appreciation and encouragement. I am confident that my kids have a solid educational foundation largely due to the commitment of Larrymore staff. This school is a hidden "gem" of Norfolk. Close Quote

Open Quote My problem with this school is that they don't offer an afterschool tutoring or homework program. Although NATO is located in Norfolk with children that have been relocated more often than most and need more assistance than children that seemingly have had a more stable lifestyle, they don't offer any additional help with school work assignments. Children with ADHD and other learning disabilities really need this help. I live in a tiny town in Georgia and the school system here offers all sorts of programs to help those children. Not every parent has the skills needed to help their children, so who other than educated adults that are skilled enough to help can they depend on? For a fee of five dollars a week these kids here get a snack, drink and help with homework for 2 hours three times a week. What about No Child Left Behind? I just can't believe this a city the size of Norfolk would allow this! Close Quote
