Newsome Park Elementary is a PK–5 school in Newport News, VA, serving 386 students in the Newport News City Public Schools district, which ranks in the 20th percentile statewide. There are encouraging signs of progress: 3rd grade math proficiency nearly doubled from 20.5% to 47.2%, and 4th grade reading improved from 31.9% to 51.0% since 2022–2023. However, because district and state scores have also risen, the school's percentile rank remains near the bottom. The evidence points toward improving attendance and learning from the successful practices of higher-performing neighbor schools as the most promising ways forward.
