Heritage High

Heritage High, one of two high schools in Lynchburg City Public Schools, serves roughly 1,113 students in grades 9–12 in Lynchburg, VA. The school currently ranks 298th out of 331 Virginia high schools for the 2025–2026 school year, earning a one-star rating and placing it in the bottom 10% statewide. The student body faces significant economic challenges: 94.9% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, far higher than nearby Jefferson Forest High (22.2%) in Bedford County Public Schools. Despite these obstacles, Heritage posts a graduation rate of 84.2% — above the district average of 81.5% — and its dropout rate of 4.6% is below the state average of 5.0%.

Chronic absenteeism is one of the school's biggest hurdles. At 34.5%, it's more than double the state rate of 14.8% and far above nearby county schools like Rustburg High (7.2%) and Brookville High (9.5%). Test scores generally trail state averages, with the most striking gap in 11th-grade Writing, where just 23.8% of Heritage students scored proficient compared to 79.8% statewide. There are some bright spots: 12th-grade students taking Algebra I posted an 88.9% proficiency rate, and small cohorts in Biology and history also performed well. Heritage also outperforms its same-district counterpart, E.C. Glass High, on several key measures despite nearly identical demographics — including a better graduation rate (84.2% vs. 79.2%) and a much lower dropout rate (4.6% vs. 9.1%).

Comparisons with nearby schools show how much socioeconomic context matters. Jefferson Forest High, just a few miles away, ranks 83rd in Virginia with a 95.6% graduation rate and only 22.2% economic need. By contrast, Heritage's 94.9% poverty rate and 34.5% chronic absenteeism create a much harder starting point. The data also show that per-pupil spending isn't the deciding factor — Heritage spends $9,859 per student, more than higher-performing Rustburg High ($7,711) and Brookville High ($6,659). The most promising levers for improvement are reducing chronic absenteeism, addressing the severe writing gap, and stabilizing year-to-year swings in subgroup performance. For parents, Heritage is a school working hard against significant odds, with genuine strengths in keeping students enrolled and graduating, even as academic recovery remains a work in progress.
