Summary

King & Queen Elementary is a small, rural public school in King and Queen Court House, Virginia, serving 168 students in grades PK through 6. The school is part of King and Queen County Public Schools, a district ranked in the bottom 15th percentile statewide, and approximately 97% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch — a reflection of significant community poverty. Despite these challenges, the school posted a strong improvement in its most recent state ranking, climbing from the 19th percentile in 2024-25 to the 40th percentile in 2025-26, its best showing in several years.

In every tested subject and grade reported in 2025-26, King & Queen Elementary outperformed its district average, often by wide margins. The standout result was 5th-grade math, where 85.71% of students scored proficient — more than 32 points above the district average and 13 points above the state average. That result matched or exceeded the 5th-grade math scores at several wealthier nearby schools, including Stonehouse Elementary, Quinton Elementary, and New Kent Elementary. King & Queen also outpaced Lawson-Marriott Elementary, the district's only other school, by 270 ranking slots. Recent state subgroup rankings suggest the school is particularly effective for economically disadvantaged students, who have consistently ranked above the school's overall standing.

The school faces real challenges, though. Chronic absenteeism rose to 19% in 2024-25, above the state rate of 14.8% and roughly double the rates at nearby high-performing schools like Stonehouse Elementary and New Kent Elementary. With only 168 students, grade-level cohorts are very small, so test scores can swing dramatically from year to year — the school's ranking has bounced between the 18th and 47th percentiles over the past several years. Gender subgroup results have also been inconsistent. Still, King & Queen's ability to exceed its district and match much wealthier schools in key subjects makes it a notable exception among high-poverty schools in the region. If attendance improves and the 5th-grade math success spreads to other grades, the school could continue its upward climb.
