Giles High is a medium-sized public high school in Pearisburg, VA, serving 530 students in grades 8–12 as part of Giles County Public Schools. The school has a favorable student-teacher ratio of 11.1:1 and spends about $9,161 per student, but it has experienced a dramatic reversal over the past two years. Once ranked 44th in Virginia in 2023–2024, Giles High has fallen to 215th out of 331 high schools for 2025–2026—a 145-place drop far larger than any nearby school including Narrows High, Blacksburg High, Pulaski County Senior High, or Radford High.

The decline spans every measurable student subgroup, including female, male, and low-income students, who now rank in the bottom quartile statewide. Chronic absenteeism has risen from 7.3% to 25.5% in four years—more than double the district average of 11.5% and well above the state average of 14.8%. Notably, nearby Narrows High serves a similar share of low-income students (69.33%) yet ranks 75 places higher, suggesting this decline is not inevitable.

Giles High retains clear strengths. Accelerated students post exceptional results: 100% proficiency in 8th-grade Algebra I and 12th-grade English Reading, plus 79.8% proficiency in biology, well above the state average. The graduation rate improved to 93.3%, above the state average of 92.3%. But on-level and middle-grades courses are struggling: 8th-grade science proficiency is just 47.01%, 9th-grade Algebra I is 72.16%, and 11th-grade reading is 79.41%, all below state averages. The pattern suggests advanced students are thriving while the broader pipeline weakens. Reducing chronic absenteeism, which has climbed four straight years, may be the most important lever for recovery. With per-pupil spending below most comparable schools ($9,161 vs. $10,653 at Narrows High and $19,176 at Radford High), the school may also need additional resources to support its growing at-risk population.
