Summary

Westbriar Elementary is a PK–6 school in Vienna, VA, that serves 840 students as part of Fairfax County Public Schools. The school has long been one of Virginia's top elementary schools, ranking in the top 70 statewide every year between 2015–16 and 2024–25, and peaking at 11th in 2021–22. In 2025–26, Westbriar Elementary ranks 88th of 1,111 Virginia elementary schools — a 92nd-percentile result that still earns a 5-star rating, but a noticeable step back from its 40th-place finish the year before. Despite the dip, students continue to score well above district and state averages in every subject and grade level, with particularly strong math results.

Westbriar stands out for its efficiency. It spent $9,624 per student in 2023–24, among the lowest of nearby schools, while neighboring schools with similar or weaker outcomes spent far more — Vienna Elementary spent $14,027, Cunningham Park Elementary spent $14,020, and Freedom Hill Elementary spent $13,379. The school also runs a higher student-teacher ratio (16.4) than almost all of its neighbors, yet still outperforms many of them. Westbriar is especially effective with student groups that often face achievement gaps: its English Language Learners ranked in the 95th percentile statewide, Hispanic students in the 93rd, and disabled students in the 91st. Only 8.93% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and chronic absenteeism (8.9%) is well below the district (11.9%) and state (14.8%) averages.

That said, Westbriar now sits behind seven neighboring schools in statewide rankings, including Wolftrap Elementary (6th), Colvin Run Elementary (9th), and Flint Hill Elementary (22nd). Recent test scores have softened across several grade levels — 6th grade math dropped from 95.2% to 86.1% proficiency, and 6th grade reading from 94.7% to 88.1% — which helps explain the slide from 40th to 88th. One emerging concern is that performance with the school's small low-income population has declined from the 95th to the 76th percentile over the past three years. Still, Westbriar remains a strong, well-above-average school in one of Virginia's most competitive elementary corridors, delivering high proficiency rates, outstanding support for English learners and students with disabilities, and impressive results given its spending level.

Open Quote I would not recommend this school if your child is a non-conformist, creative, intellectually curious child who questions the establishment, not to be disruptive but because they want to learn and know. Teachers play favorites, which plays out on full display during 6th grade promotion awards. Unremarkable kids who know how to play teacher’s pet and conform get recognized, while hard-working high-performing children get side-lined. 18 teachers are leaving the school after the 2018-2019 school year. Administration and teachers are overwhelmed and wholly focused on test scores and ranking. Learning and critical thinking falls on the shoulders of the children with help from parents, tutors, and supplemental learning resources. AAP students get all the lift. Bullying goes unaddressed. Teachers are hit or miss. The parents are clannish and stick to their own kind. I would look at other schools in Vienna before choosing which neighborhood to live in. Close Quote
