Summary

Crestwood Elementary is a PK-5 public school in Richmond, VA, that serves 635 students and is part of Chesterfield County Public Schools. Despite serving a high-poverty population (76.85% of students qualify for free/reduced lunch), Crestwood currently ranks 556th out of 1,111 Virginia elementary schools — the 50th percentile — placing it right at the state median and above its district's overall 44th percentile ranking. After dipping to the 27th percentile in 2022-23, the school has climbed steadily, reflecting real momentum in recent years.

Crestwood's biggest academic strengths are in 4th and 5th grade. Fourth grade math proficiency sits at 83% — nearly 11 points above the district average — and 4th grade Virginia Studies proficiency (80.77%) also outpaces the district. Fifth grade math has surged from 38.33% proficient in 2022-23 to 73.2% in 2025-26, and 5th grade science jumped from 56.98% to 72.92% over the same period. The school also beats many nearby schools with similar poverty levels: Crestwood outperforms A.M. Davis Elementary in nearly every subject, despite both schools serving around 76% low-income students. Attendance is another bright spot — chronic absenteeism is just 12.9%, better than the state average and far below most Richmond City peer schools.

The clearest area for growth is 3rd grade reading, where only 57.33% of students are proficient, compared with 67.61% statewide — the lowest among nearby Chesterfield elementary schools like Bon Air Elementary and Greenfield Elementary. English Language Learner students also saw a sharp one-year drop, from the 52nd to the 20th percentile. Crestwood spends $8,564 per student — less than most surrounding schools — yet still achieves respectable results. Bottom line: Crestwood is a solid, improving mid-tier school that punches above its weight given its poverty level and funding. If it can apply the same momentum it has shown in math and attendance to early literacy, it has strong potential to keep climbing.

Open Quote One of the nest hidden gems on the area! The PTA has consistently won awards for their service. Parents of ALL children are involved in their children’s education. Teachers are hard-working and dedicated to the best instruction for students. Everyone advocates for all children, and the student body and staff are diverse. Parents here realize that it takes a village to raise successful children. Responsibility does solely rely on the teachers and administrators. Focus is on the “whole” child, not just test scores.
