Greenbrier Intermediate is a grades 3–5 elementary school in Chesapeake, Virginia, serving 657 students as part of Chesapeake City Public Schools. The school currently ranks 503rd of 1,111 Virginia elementary schools (55th percentile) with a 3-star rating — a solid mid-range result that marks a dramatic turnaround from a decade ago, when it sat in the bottom quarter of the state with a 1-star rating. It reached a 4-star peak in 2020–2021 and 2022–2023 before easing back over the past two years. Even so, Greenbrier is clearly the strongest intermediate school in its immediate Chesapeake area, outperforming Sparrow Road Intermediate and George W. Carver Intermediate by wide margins in every subject, despite all three serving similarly high-poverty populations.

Attendance is a major strength. Just 8.2% of students are chronically absent — less than half the state rate of 14.8% and well below nearby schools like Georgetown Primary (14.3%). Students are showing up, and it shows in 4th grade: reading proficiency is 80.4%, above district and state averages, and math runs at or above state levels. Fifth grade is softer, with reading at 71.3% and science declining to 68.7% after sitting in the mid-70s a few years ago.

The biggest challenge is a rapid demographic shift: free/reduced-price lunch eligibility nearly doubled in two years, from 37.8% in 2022–2023 to 72.5% today. Disabled and military-connected students rank in the bottom 10–13% of Virginia schools and need targeted support. Meanwhile, Greenbrier spends less per student ($10,292) and has larger class sizes (17.6:1) than almost every nearby comparison school. Higher-resourced Virginia Beach schools like Centerville Elementary — about two miles away with a 28% poverty rate and roughly $5,000 more per student — post higher scores. Greenbrier's strong attendance, proven improvement, and clear edge over its Chesapeake peers show it is doing a great deal with the resources it has, but sustaining that progress will likely require additional investment as student needs grow.

This was my child's first year at Greenbrier Intermediate. He had a wonderful teacher and the school staff is friendly and helpful. It seems they know all the students and the atmosphere is more like "family". Greenbrier Intermediate has an active PTA made up of wonderful parent volunteers who do a great job of planning fundraising events to benefit the school. I would like to see more opportunities for the children to participate in art, music and physical education in addition to the more than adequate academics offered. All in all, I would give GRI an "A" !!!!! Close Quote
