Summary

Butts Road Intermediate, in Chesapeake, VA, serves 579 students in grades 3–5 as part of Chesapeake City Public Schools and currently ranks 108th among Virginia's 1,111 elementary schools — placing it in the top 10% statewide.

The school's SOL proficiency rates are well above district and state averages in every subject and grade level. In 2025–2026, math proficiency ranged from 88.1% to 93.9% across grades 3–5, while reading ranged from 84.9% to 89.0% — roughly 10–20 percentage points above state averages. Fifth-grade science (82.8%) and Virginia Studies (87.9–90.8%) are similarly strong. Butts Road outperforms nearby schools such as Great Bridge Intermediate, Salem Elementary, and Centerville Elementary, and does so while spending $10,385 per student — notably less than the $13,986–$15,399 spent by several Virginia Beach area schools. The school's student-teacher ratio of 18.5 also reflects an efficient operation delivering top-tier results.

Butts Road is particularly effective at supporting students who often face greater challenges. Hispanic students rank in the 96th percentile statewide, and low-income students rank in the 95th percentile — both outstanding results. Chronic absenteeism is just 6.2%, far below the state average of 14.8%. One area to watch, however, is the sharp recent decline in outcomes for students with disabilities, which fell from the 92nd percentile in 2022–2023 to the 27th percentile in 2025–2026. With stable top-10% rankings for a decade, Butts Road Intermediate remains one of the strongest elementary options in Chesapeake.

Open Quote If you'd like a school that strictly teaches a test so it gets good scores, this is it. The 5th graders don't even have free range to choose their own science experiments for the mandatory science fair!!! My child's homework when they went here even referenced EXACTLY WHERE in the SOL this homework pertained to.
If you'd like a school that teaches to your child, this is not it. They are so concerned with looking good, they don't even have the special needs kids go to this school. They've made arrangements to bus them to a different school farther away. Talk about a way to NOT teach kids about diversity, acceptance, etc... Close Quote
