Summary

Carroll County High is a large public high school in Hillsville, VA, serving 1,033 students in grades 9–12 as part of Carroll County Public Schools. It is by far the largest of the three local high schools — Fort Chiswell High serves 411 students and Galax High serves 432 — and it educates a student body in which roughly 89% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, a high-poverty rate nearly identical to Galax and above Fort Chiswell's 81%.

The school's most notable storyline is its dramatic turnaround. In 2018–2019, it ranked 290th out of 327 Virginia high schools (11th percentile); by 2025–2026, it had climbed to 103rd out of 331 (69th percentile) with a 3-star rating. The school is especially strong with economically disadvantaged students, ranking in the 77th percentile for that subgroup. Academically, Carroll County High shines in several areas: 94.9% of 11th graders were proficient in writing in 2025–2026 (versus 79.9% statewide), Algebra I and Earth Science results were well above state averages, and Biology proficiency reached 81.4%. However, social studies has been a chronic weak spot — World History II proficiency was just 11.4% in 2022–2023 — and 12th-grade reading (65.0%) trails the state average (70.2%).

Graduation and attendance paint a mixed picture. The 2024–2025 graduation rate of 92.2% matches the state average but trails Fort Chiswell High (97.0%) and Galax High (99.0%), while the dropout rate of 5.4% is slightly above the state's 5.0%. Chronic absenteeism has improved to 10.5%, below the state's 14.8% but above the district average of 8.9%. The school spends $9,179 per student, less than Fort Chiswell's $9,638 and Galax's $12,127, yet maintains the lowest student-teacher ratio (11.6) of the three. Nearby Fort Chiswell High ranks 18th in the state, showing a clear local reference point for Carroll County High's continued improvement.

Open Quote I am Carroll County High School alumni. I graduated class of 2003. The English department is seriously lacking. Grammar is a joke. I will never send my children to Carroll County Public Schools. Close Quote
